Title:
LEADERSHIP, EMPOWERMENT, INFLUENCE – Part 4
By Bryan Arzani
Working through the process, the woman is implementing the plan. She has engaged a project whereby she shares her knowledge with fellow students learning to be administrators. She planned the project from the beginning, to the end….connecting all the stepping stones in the middle. She is learning how to handle questions and push-back, how to motivate through barriers, and how to show others that they have potential.
Throughout this, the initial two leaders are supporting her. They provide materials and resources. They provide time to work on her project, away from her other duties. They provide knowledge, as they answer her questions from their vast array of experiences. Knowledge is imparted through discussion, not lecture.
A second example involves a group of high school students participating in a week long camp. On the opening day, they learn about communication styles and complete a short quiz to identify theirs.
Immediately upon completion, they engage in an experiential activity. They instantly become involved in something that requires them to use communication. The students begin to recognize how their communication style affects their ability to work with (or not) a team. Self-awareness begins to become prevalent, as the students are placed into an activity which will require them to stretch their skills and knowledge.
After completion of the activity, a debriefing occurs. Students talk about what they noticed about their communication styles. Questions from the facilitators lead the students to apply self-understanding to the real world. Throughout the entire week, the other camp leaders refer back to the students’ learning and teach application to other situations.
Support was provided in both examples. Barriers were removed. People were allowed to learn from their mistakes. Leadership, empowerment, and influence. How are you demonstrating these concepts? How can you create a better future?
