Title: LEADING THROUGH A FAST FUTURE – Part 4

Think in terms of ‘building the airplane, while we’re flying it’. Learn as you go. And as you go, perhaps you’ll need to improvise. That’s far better than standing on the sidelines, waiting with your awesome plan in your hands…as the world whisks by. This reframe involves replacing the top-down model of knowledge transmission with a system that is connected and teaches people how to learn. As a leader, are you pointing to the rules to follow, or are you instructing your people in learning and solving techniques?

Principle eight brings in a story of the reed and the oak tree. When hurricane winds blows, the oak shatters, while the reed bows low, then springs back up when the storm has passed. This presents a great visual, doesn’t it? When we try to resist failure (again with all this planning to predict and handle any problem that your company/team/self could encounter) we create an environment that actually draws it. And, we break. An attitude of resilience allows you to recover from failures, because you don’t see them as failures. You see them as opportunities to learn. And as you learn, you become more resistant to failure. Isn’t it great how that works?

So, as leaders, recognize that our world is moving so fast that we may not be able to keep up. That’s OK. Don’t become so mired in processes and rules that you begin to live in quicksand. You don’t want to be in a position of not being able to move forward, while you slowly sink into oblivion.
