Title:
LEADING THROUGH A FAST FUTURE – Part 3
By: Jennifer Erickson
When reviewing principle three, think of the differences between a compass and a map. A map implies a detailed knowledge of the terrain and the existence of an optimum route. We can get hemmed in thinking there is a ‘right’ way or a ‘good’ way to do something. The compass is a more flexible tool and requires us to be more creative and autonomous when thinking about ways to move forward. As our world moves more quickly, we can’t be tightly wedded to an algorithm.
Principle five is one that may make some leaders a bit nervous. Why would a leader encourage disobedience? It’s in the manner of framing this. To be creative, we need freedom from restraints. Creative approaches lead to problem solutions that make people say, “Wow!” People are being disobedient over compliance. They are moving quicker. They are thinking more quickly.
Principle six bring in a quote from another well-known leader: Yogi Berra. He challenges us with the idea that “in theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.” As we lead in a future that is moving faster, change is the new constant. It joins death and taxes as things that will always ‘be certain’. If you lead from a model of ‘wait and plan’ or ‘plan and wait’, you could pay a high price.
