Title:
LEADING THROUGH A FAST FUTURE – Part 1
By: Jennifer Erickson
Our world is turning on a dime…..sometimes even faster than that. Careers, opportunities, and problems will emerge in a few years that we couldn’t even imagine today. And, if we can’t imagine it, we can’t plan for it…specifically. But, we plan not by managing the specific issue, but by creating a culture of problem-solving and creativity. We develop ourselves into leaders who are comfortable with being uncomfortable, knowing that uncertainty is our world.
To be a great leader, we must see situations through new eyes. Marcel Proust said “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in seeing them through new eyes”. This speaks to the phenomenon of walking away from a jigsaw puzzle after scouring the correct place to put that darn piece which is red, striped, and circular with an edge sticking out…..then coming back a few hours later (or a day) and BAM! You “see” where to put that piece immediately. You have new eyes.
Solving problems requires this kind of trust to know that if you discipline yourself to look at something in a new way, the solution will be close at hand. Leadership is recognizing that our world is moving so quickly our past ways of doing something may not work.
