Title: LEADERSHIP & NON-CONFORMISTS – Part 2

By Bryan Arzani

George Bernard Shaw said “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

In other words, as a leader, you want some discontent. You want some discord. No idea, process, or product was ever created from following the status quo. Someone had to be discontented enough to say, “There must be something better! Let’s find it!” Steve Jobs would say, “Customers don’t know what they want until we show them.”

While it takes courage to say something like that, it also takes an inherent ‘comfortableness’ with demolition. As leaders, we need to be okay with destroying some things, in order to get to that destination of “better”.

How do you run your meetings? How do you talk with your team? When do you observe your team working on a project, in order to learn about their processes and pitfalls? Is it all right for a team member to say, “The emperor has no clothes?”

Groupthink kills creativity. Groupthink obliterates whispering an idea that might be radical. If you want to move your team to even higher levels of performance, push for radical discussions. Ask the hard questions about doing something differently, not being satisfied with status quo, not being content to ‘just make the quarterly goals’. Push your team to creativity and originality. Push them to non-conformity!
