Title: THE VALUE OF YOUR TEAM – Part 4

Role awareness focuses on whether or not a person sees the value he/she brings to a role. The role can be professional or personal. For some people, their work/life equilibrium is so out of whack, they can’t see if they are doing good for anyone. In fact, they will state, “I think about home at work. I take phone calls from family members. When I’m at home, I’m thinking about work and answering emails and texts. I’m not good at either place.” All of this chaos creates an employee who is unable to focus and produce.

Assisting individual members of your team will begin with showing empathy. It’s helpful to put yourself in the place of your employee. Talk about how you see that situation could be overwhelming. (BTW, never say that you know what a person is going through. This just isn’t ever true and diminishes the employee’s situation).

Ask him/her what you could do to assist. Outline some specific behaviors and talents that the employee offers the team. List concrete tasks that you need the employee to complete, so the team can move forward. Help the employee separate what “must” be done from what “would be nice” to have done. Facilitate a discussion around ways the employee can compartmentalize segments of his/her day.

Displaying sincere empathy, creating a culture where it’s OK for an employee to say “no” to a request for extra time, and ensuring individuals can identify the value they bring to your team are immense ways to create a team that is committed and productive. Your bottom line goals will be achieved….seemingly with ease.
