Title:
EMPATHY AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE – Part 2
By Bryan Arzani
When a person is well-versed in emotional intelligence (EQ), he/she is said to show empathy…to be able to view issues through another person’s eyes. Goleman lists four parts to EQ: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Research tells us that EQ is just as important and valuable for a leader as is IQ. In fact, EQ could help leaders navigate through situations more that IQ could.
Being able to view issues through another person’s eyes helps you build trust and respect with your team. People feel valued, when they know they are cared for. When team members believe you really care about them and their welfare, they can accept tough decisions (such as offering no raises, cutting benefits, or giving people extra duties to make up for a vacant position) better. They will still commit to you, their leader.
Empathy is expressed through listening to your team. It’s shown each time you ask about their struggles and successes. It’s demonstrated when you work alongside them.
As a leader, are you putting yourself in your team’s place? Do you see things from their view? To sincerely show empathy is to display emotional intelligence and create a loyal, productive team.
