Title:
FOUNDATION OF LEADERSHIP – Part 2
By Bryan Arzani
Acting with integrity and being a trustworthy person holds the compass by which your team navigates. To drive your team to even higher performance, you must demonstrate these qualities. And, you must demonstrate them at all times, not just when it is convenient or when someone is watching.
To check your integrity, answer the following questions…Do you: “walk the talk”, make clear goals, act from a set of personal guiding principles, do what you say you will do, and accept accountability rather than blame others? If you can’t rate yourself with a 5 (almost always) for these, imagine what is happening to trust at your company.
Lack of integrity causes trust to erode. Lack of integrity can be insidious, so you must be convicted in your purpose toward your team and your company. How do you know if others define you as a trustworthy person?
Gauge their reactions when you say you’ll do something. If you read their nonverbals as “yeah, right”…you may not have carried through on things you said you’d do. If they fail to inform you of something happening with the team, or don’t come to you with a new idea to discuss…chances are that you eroded trust sometime in the past.
Warren Buffet said “you can work your entire life to build a reputation, yet lose it in a matter of minutes”. Those minutes matter. Check to see how you act from a place of integrity and trust.
