Title: LEADERSHIP, EMPOWERMENT, INFLUENCE – Part 3

By Jennifer Erickson

While you are discussing empowerment with your employee, you’ll banter about when to make the move or what it will look like. Some leaders start off with a project that is relatively innocuous. This way, there is room for error, and it’s not a hugely public event. Remember, we learn from our mistakes. We learn when we conduct a post-mortem and review our processes, figuring out what we could have done differently. Giving an employee the chance to do this is essential in empowerment.

A couple of examples of empowerment in action, decisions driven by leadership and the grasp of influence. The processes may be different, but the end goal is the same.

A person who is a teacher, has shown potential to be an excellent administrator. A leader working with this woman recognized the potential and began to have conversations with her. While she had interest in becoming an administrator, she had a passion for bettering herself. She also recognized her influence as a leader could expand, while in an administrator role.

Skills were assessed, and it was determined she did have a profile pattern (behavioral style, motivator, and decision-making style) that fit well with being an administrator. Then, the initial leader gained the involvement of another leader. The two met with the woman to discuss the process for moving her upward.
