Title:
IN MEMORY OF A LEADER – Part 1
By Jennifer Erickson
May holds a holiday that people use to mark the beginning of summer. Some schools are done housing students and have released them to the wonder of days without schedules. Some adults use this holiday to mark when they become “more relaxed” at work. The wardrobe may change to embrace sandals and a more casual attire. Hours may become more flexible to allow transporting children to softball games, scout camp, or other activities that all of a sudden DO require attention to schedules.
May brings us Memorial Day. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It was born out of the Civil War with a wish to honor our dead fellow citizens. It was officially proclaimed in 1868 for the purpose of laying flowers (decorating) on graves of anyone who had died in defense of our country.
Memorial Day is a day of remembering and honoring. While usually for the selfless act of serving our country, we can also think of it as a time to honor those we admire. How awesome would it be if we told that person how much we appreciate him/her…..while he/she was still living!
As a leader, how do you want to be honored? How do you want to be remembered? What impact are you making on the lives of the people you lead? If you weren’t around, how much darkness would be in that chasm?
