Title: INNOVATION IN A CHANGING WORLD – Part 2

In his book Permanent Innovat!on, Langdon Morris says that permanent innovation (yes, the title actually has an exclamation mark in it) must be done continuously and that it is strategic and becomes a habit. The idea of permanent innovation must become a core value. He begins with ten principles of permanent innovation.

1. Innovation is essential to survival, and it is strategic.
2. There are four types of innovation: incremental, breakthrough products or technologies, new business models, & new ventures.
3. The longer you wait to begin innovating, the worse things will get.
4. Innovation is a social art; it happens when people are together.
5. Innovation without methodology is just luck.
6. All four strategic viewpoints are critical to success.
7. Ideas come from identifying unknown & unmet needs.
8. Ready, aim, aim, aim, fire.
9. Prototype rapidly to accelerate learning.
10. Innovation requires leadership.

What is the culture you have created? What is the culture you want to create? Do you empower your team to take risks, to search for that unmet need, to get together & brainstorm, to be planful about this?

Think about the goals you have for your team and your company. Are they the tried-and-true ones? Grow by 10%, meet customer needs, etc. Or, are you stretching the minds of yourself and your team? Are you innovating, in a planful way?

What would your company look like if you followed those ten principles? How engaged would your staff be? How awesome of a product or service could you provide to customers?

The choice is yours. The choice is always yours, because you are a leader.
