Title: RENEWAL – Part 2

Renewal means revitalization, revival, recovery. To renew yourself as a leader means to throw open the windows of your mind and learn something new. Try something new. Read an article by someone you usually disagree with. Learn a different point of view.

Get rid of those ideas that no longer fit. Maybe they don’t mesh with your team, which has changed members since the end of last year. Maybe you’ve taken a different route on your leadership journey, and realize you must try a new map. Maybe you are tired of throwing the ball of silly putty up against the wall, watching it slide down…and realize you’ve got to find an altered way of making it stick.

Make yourself come alive again! “Sharpen the saw” was the way Stephen Covey talked about this in his book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. In order to be the best we can be, we MUST take time out for renewal.

This means learning, trying, asking, reading, discussing, and yes…even failing. It’s not November or December anymore. It’s not OK to slog through a day with eyelids half shut. It’s not OK to let your brain cells get as immovable as a car parked on a hill after the snow plow has emphasized the “no parking” sign by pushing a pile of snow up against it.

Leaders must take time for renewal. If you think you don’t have time for it, that’s fine. That’s your decision. Just be prepared to watch your competition whiz by you. They know that renewal is essential. They know that March welcomes renewal with open arms, craning its neck to see what you’re going to do. How will you answer this?
