Title:
CONFLICT, CONFETTI, THE MOON, AND A FORK – Part 1
By Jennifer Erickson
What an odd assortment of items: conflict, confetti, the moon, and a fork. Yet they all play a role in leadership, in defining the kind of leader you are.
What kind of a leader are you? Are you one who shuns conflict, hoping someone else will handle it; or that people will get so busy, they’ll forget about it? Are you one who promises the moon and a party, but doesn’t deliver?
What kind of leader do you want to be? You first have to be self-aware, to know what needs either leveraging or building. To take this kind of look at yourself, you may need to open old wounds. Or, you may need to ask your team for honest feedback about your skills and caring. This could cause inner conflict. How you handle this plays a big role in the definition of you and leadership. It defines how you build your team and develop them.
As you build your team or continue to work with the one you have, conflict arises. This can be over something as simple as where you’ll have lunch to celebrate Administrative Assistants’ Day (because, we ALWAYS go where Sally wants to go; or, we ALWAYS have to follow Rashma’s schedule which means we go later). Or, it can be over something as important as how the project will be carried out and the process to present it to the client.
