Title: LEADING AND LEARNING – Part 2

When in the achievement paradigm, we believe we are OK only when winning. We will try to be the best at everything….even sitting the closest to the speaker at an event. Life is a competition. A leader in this paradigm will have a hard time getting the group to “win-win” and synergy. There is too much keeping score going on. We deal with reality by beating it.

The integrity paradigm is the one wrapped around learning. We think we are OK, even when we are not. Life is wonderful! People are great! We deal with reality by learning from it. Now, notice that I didn’t say everything always works out in the end. Reality can be hard, difficult, and pretty awful. But, we brush ourselves off and ask, “What can I learn from this?”

A leader must cultivate a culture of learning from mistakes. He/she must foster the idea of calculated risk taking. We learn from these situations, if we allow ourselves to do so.

We are comfortable with saying we didn’t know something, or that we made a mistake, or that we couldn’t have completed the project without the work of Samantha. We learn from past events, from our history.
