Title: VISION, WHEN YOU’RE NOT SURE OF YOUR DESTINATION

One of the most important jobs of being a leader deals with vision. A leader has to first know his/her vision. Then, the vision has to be communicated to the followers. Visions must be clear, valuable, and achievable. Visions need to be stated concisely, be important to the followers, and be within reach.

If you don’t lead from a vision, you have no followers and are just out taking a walk. This is a tough fence to balance. A leader needs to have heads in the clouds and stars in the eyes….in order to think from the 60,000 foot view. This is where leaders meet to dream and ask questions such as: “what if?”, or “could it be?”, or “why not?”

But, a leader also has to be grounded in reality. A leader must know what is achievable and if the talent he/she has can complete the tasks. It may be great to have a vision to invent hover boards that travel over water. But, if you don’t have the talent or resources, it won’t happen. Just ask Marty McFly from the original movie Back to the Future, as he drove the DeLorean into October of 2015 and was disappointed (although Lexus did work on developing a prototype).

So, if visions have to be grounded in reality, how do we ever dream and let go of the shackles that holler the negative comments and remind us that we will fail? You have to have faith. Faith in yourself and in the people around you. Just look at the refugee team that competed in the Summer Olympics in Rio.

This was a team in the 2016 Summer Olympics unlike any other team before them. They were a team made up of people who didn’t have amazing speed, phenomenal muscles, or soft jump shots. They didn’t share a common bond of one country. They didn’t have a common language, National Anthem or flag. In fact, most of them hadn’t seen their countries’ flags for years.
