Title: REALITY – Part 2

The people we lead have realities, too. We are their leader, whether they like it or not. But, as their leader, we have a responsibility to develop them and help them achieve goals. Sometimes, this means that we have to crack the veneer of their reality. Sometimes, the people we lead paint a different picture of their reality. It is not “what is”, but rather “what they’d like it to be.”

It can be as though their definition of reality has been constructed with the hammer and nails of a computer program that supplies a panacea for the expectations you have of them. Or, that their behaviors are animated little characters, dancing around targeted goal areas as they flit and fly to impossible perches.

Our job, as leaders, is to ensure reality stays as “what is”. This may mean having difficult conversations with those who are on our team. The words need to be respectful enough to command attention, yet pointed and clear enough to mandate change.

We don’t do our team any favors when we allow their reality to roll forward, hoisting definitions so different that they may as well have been created in the tiny chip that seems to drive our lives…..or definitions so animated that they cause our team to giggle and grab at the “icon of the hour”, rather than stay focused on the end goal. Leadership is about empowering our team to concentrate on the end goal, while still having fun. But, fun that is reality based, not artificial or augmented.
