Title: Moving Forward – Part 1

August can be a month of changes: the summer season begins to wind down; some formality returns to work; sports seasons end for baseball, softball, and soccer; and school begins. Change is a scary word for some people. It conjures up images of harried people (usually themselves), breathless expectations that won’t be met, black holes into which ideas disappear, and new procedures (are these really necessary!!??) to learn. But, we can also look at these as ‘transitions’. The word transition implies a bit of a slower movement forward. The word offers the opportunity to keep one hand firmly in ‘the past’ while the other hand grasps at the future. Transitions may be done at our own pace.

Even in Iowa, our temperatures don’t go from 85 degrees to 55 degrees in one day. Summer gently unfolds into autumn. The formality returns to work in phases: hours worked in the week lengthen, attire moves from a goal of keeping cool to a goal of being cool, conversations become more goal oriented and less grill oriented. Baseball, softball, and soccer float from the summer season to the fall season. Uniforms, rules, and players remain the same. It’s just known by a different name, now.

Perhaps one of the biggest transitions to happen in August is going back to school. Many people, of all ages, are beginning the task of preparing themselves for work, earning a living, and making their mark on the world. Their school may be a trade school, an AA degree, a bachelor’s degree, or a graduate degree. All have in common the idea of moving forward.
