So, how to lead all the generations to work together? First, recognize that people are different. Your employees aren’t coming from a cookie cutter. People are motivated differently. They have varying levels of engagement. Some ideas to lead these 5, 6, or 7 generations in your company and to leverage the millennial generation:

• Give people a significant role where they can make a difference
• Ensure everyone knows the vision and parameters to get there
• Execute pay and profit sharing fairly and transparently
• Incorporate peer recruiting strategies
• Offer flexible scheduling and telecommuting options
• Offer paid volunteer days
• Realize that generations assimilate
• Offer learning opportunities that will truly develop an employee
• Really examine if you offer work-life balance
• Offer mentoring options across generations (all can learn)
• Examine your corporate responsibility
• Create a sense of belonging in your company
• Examine the reputation of your company. Ensure it’s stellar.
• Reward by results, not by number of hours worked
• Relax rigid hierarchies and traditional working practices
• Recognize that NOT all millennials feel “entitled”.
• Deal with resentment that some other generations may feel toward millennials, especially if millennials move into management roles
• Be clear about your expectations
• Align your business plan and talent strategy

Companies will be stronger and more vibrant, with increased ROI when leaders facilitate the generations working together better.
