Title: MILLENNIALS IN THE WORKPLACE – Part 1

Millennials! We’ve heard so much about them. Who are the millennials? According to the Brookings Institute, millennials are a group of people born between the years of 1982 and 2003. This makes them between the ages of 13 and 34. In the workplace, millennials are between the ages of 18 to 34. Much conversation is around the fact that we can have 5, 6, or even 7 generations in the workplace. Whew! That’s a huge opportunity for communication issues, creativity, anger and frustration, or growth. Notice how that list is both positive and negative.

As leaders, it’s so important that we understand the various generations. They are motivated differently. They have different ideas about their careers. Loyalty is defined in diverse ways. Work attitudes are various. To quote Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore!”

Do we really need to accommodate all these generations? Some leaders say they can’t keep their heads around their goals, the measurements, and the roof repair…..let along what motivates and engages seven generations. Then, those leaders are missing many opportunities to grow their team and company. They will lose people who could be the drivers of the next awesome change, or the next great money-making idea.

Millennials bring a creative, enthusiastic drive to the workplace. They offer a keen perspective on situations, being somewhat suspicious of the “old guard”. Just who are these millennials?
