Title:
INTEGRITY – Part 1
By Jennifer Erickson
In this political season, the stakes are high. People say that every election cycle, but it seems to be especially true in this one. Conversations, discussions, and arguments focus on integrity.
Confucius said that the strength of a nation derives from the strength of a home. Zig Ziglar said that with integrity, you have nothing to fear, since you have nothing to hide. C.S. Lewis said that integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
Listen to what the candidates are saying and watch what they are doing. Do these match? Most often, they do not. So, what are we to believe? We see an image of a person one way, then hear reports of the right behavior being tossed in the wind when no one else is around….or when they thought they could get away with something. The talk about not having anything to hide doesn’t center on righteous behavior, but rather on “gotcha” when a report exposes behavior that a person wanted to have stay hidden.
What would Confucius say about your home? Here, home is analogous to your team which is part of your company. Does it demonstrate integrity? Do you, as a leader, demonstrate integrity?
Integrity is not about being expeditious. Often, doing the right thing can take time. You have to get other’s opinions. You have to determine what happened. You have to ensure people are developed to be their best.
