Title: ENGAGEMENT AND CULTURE – Part 2

By Bryan Arzani

What kind of culture is present at your company? How do you use it to engage employees? Is this strategic, on your part?

A good leader knows the answers to these questions, with the latter question probably being the most important. Culture doesn’t just show up some day. It has been culled year after year. People may not even be able to identify what happened to create a certain culture. But, everyone can identify when something is killing a company.

Culture can be identified through some of these questions: “how do we celebrate the arrival of a new employee?”, “is the membership on our leadership team reflective of our workforce?”, “how do we handle it when employees disagree with decisions?”, or “can we identify the reasons people apply to our company?” or “can we identify the reasons people stay with our company?”

Peter Drucker hit on something important when he said, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast!” You can have a great strategy to implement a change or move forward with a product. But without the underlying culture, your employees won’t be engaged, and your goals could fail.

Your culture is the reason people apply to work with you. Culture is the reason they stay. It is the driving force behind their engagement, creativity, and productivity.
