Title: COMMUNICATION

By Bryan Arzani

Much has been written about communication. We facilitate seminars for leaders and teams on the topic. It is endemic in the executive coaching and team building that we provide. Our profile measures communication styles.

In addition to knowing your communication style, it’s helpful for leaders to know how often they communicate and what they communicate. You may be puzzled, as you’re thinking, “I talk all the time. I tell people what to do and the parameters around which it needs to be done.”

But, are you telling them they are valued? What do you say that communicates this? How often do you communicate it?

Deming said we should work on our process, not the outcome of our process. I think one of the most important ways to show a team member you value them, is to communicate this during the process. If you wait until the end of a project, then the value gets tied to the outcome. If you communicate a person’s value during the project, the value is tied to the person’s skills and efforts.

Research and surveys, time and again, report that people are engaged in their work and stay with a company when they feel they are valued. If you value a team member, communicate this. Communicate it often. Communicate it clearly. Then, step back and reap the benefits.
