Title: WHAT LEADERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HOW PEOPLE THINK & LEARN IN ORDER TO LEAD THEM BETTER - PART 4

You’ve done a good job utilizing the above-mentioned points. You understand how your people think and learn, and you’ve applied it. Now what? You have to “close the deal”. Get them to take some action. Because, isn’t that the main reason we talk with our people…whether it’s in a team setting, with a large group, or on an individual basis? We want them to do something different!!!

Getting People to Take Action

**You can provide logical reasons for taking action. This will help people make the move from unconscious reasoning to conscious reasoning.

**Remember, though…..the logical reasons will often not be the one they unconsciously use to make the decision. That can still be based on emotions.

**People want/need a specific call to action. They respond to a sense of danger. Will I lose something, if I don’t act?

**People make decisions for emotional reasons.

**People think they want a lot of choices, and may actually tell you this. But, they can actually decide only among 3 or 4 things at once. Provide some choice, but not all.

**When people have choices, they feel in control. Offer choices whenever you can, but make sure you are OK with whichever one people choose.

**People are influenced by what others think. Get opinions/ideas from others. If presenting data, tell what other people are doing.

**Reinforce the behavior from your people that you want.

**Collaboration activities are intrinsically rewarding. Can people work together to some end?

As a leader, it is important that we achieve our goals. We do this through our people. Knowing how our people think and learn will help us modify our behaviors so that we approach people differently and are able to attain the highest return on our time—a move toward the direction of success.
