Title: WHAT LEADERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HOW PEOPLE THINK & LEARN IN ORDER TO LEAD THEM BETTER - PART 2

By Jill Olson

Presenting information to people:

**People process better in chunks of information: give small amount of info, explain it, say it again in small steps.

**People learn best in 20-minute chunks. People are driven to create categories in their memories, so chunk information relative to other points.

**People need context: context helps people understand what you are saying

**People filter information you give them according to their mental models, culture, and purpose for being with you. Confirm a belief they already have, so you make a connection.

**Knowledge of learning styles is important. Know your style and ensure you don’t rely on only this as you are talking. Utilize all three styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.

**People process information best in story form and learn from examples. Use of a story provides a way to change their minds or learn a new concept

**Short-term memory is limited. When introducing new information, move it to long-term memory by using stories, examples, or exercises. Use concrete words, not abstract ones.

**People remember beginnings and endings more than middles. Make these strong parts of your discussion.

**Examples help the audience process information more deeply. Don’t just tell them, show them. People have to use the information in order to make it stick.
