Title: HAVING FUN – Part 2

By Jennifer Erickson

So now we get to the third reason: not being able to relax and really have fun. How is this even possible? Americans seem to wear their workaholic moniker as a badge of honor. Some people look at those who take vacations or leave work early as being weak.

What is this fascination with work? Perhaps our self-identification is so wrapped up in work that we can’t name ourselves by anything other than what we do for a living. Think about this….when you go to a party, meet someone new, or attend a networking event—what is one of the first questions you are asked: what do you do?

I recently facilitated a seminar in which we mentioned this. One of the participants said when she lived in Europe, this question was asked frequently. But, it had a different connotation than here in the US. When it was asked across the pond, the meaning was – what do you do for fun? Or, how do you give back to your community?

So, I’m sorry, I am going to ask you to think here. I know it is July, and it is summer. But, think about this for just a minute. How would your life be different if you defined yourself by how you made life better for someone? What would you do differently? And, here’s the kicker—–how would life be better for those you touched, when you were more concerned with making the neighborhood/city/county/state/world a better place?

Make a difference. Let go of your pre-conceived notions of how you ‘should’ be. Have fun……already!!!
