Title: DEFINE YOUR PURPOSE – Part 1

By Jill Olson

We go through our days, one step at a time, getting things done. Maybe we complete a project at work. Or perhaps we finish that new historical fiction novel that everyone is talking about. Or we might just make progress on a multiple-week, intricate assignment. We are “doing”.

We think about what all this “doing” gets us. We might own a nice house, with a landscaped garden we’ve always dreamed of having. We might be driving that flashy car that turns heads when we drive to Hy-Vee. Maybe we saved enough money to buy one of those colorful sculptures featured every year at the Art Festival. This is “having”.

While doing and having can bring us a sense of accomplishment and pleasure, our deepest meaning and satisfaction come from “being”. This is that internal sense of “liking ourselves” or “being at peace”. Being has to do with our internal experience….it is not tangible. Some people chase this feeling of peace by frenetically “doing” things. Others race themselves to accumulate the newest and shiniest, believing that “having” equals satisfaction.

As we talk about living from a vision, all three (doing, having, being) are levels of that vision. It is fine to have a vision of owning a large house, or moving up in your company. Doing and having are methods for achieving our “being” vision. Think about how you felt when you achieved something you’d worked years for. That is your inner experience.

It is this inner experience that drives us to move forward. We are compelled to find that sense of peace, the comfort, the excitement that comes when we are satisfied internally. Absence of this internal satisfaction can truly be painful for some people. They know something is missing; that what they own or do isn’t giving them the joy they crave. Mistakenly, they try to achieve inner peace by doing and having more. This seems to dig a hole, pushing them further away from their goal. What is there to this life we have now? What is our purpose?
