Title: THE VALUE OF YOUR TEAM – Part 3

Leaders achieve their goals through the work of others. This is why a one word definition of leadership is “influence”. Being able to influence your team, to develop them, to gain commitment from them….is to be able to achieve the goals of the company.

As a leader, do you often express your appreciation of your team? Are you able to identify contributions made by each individual member? Is your attitude one of “we are in this together”? In other words….do you know the value of your team? Do they?

It’s important that each team member recognize the gifts and talents he/she brings to the company. Without this, a person will be fearful of offering a creative idea. A person will step back from taking on more work, believing he/she doesn’t have the capacity to handle it. Not understanding one’s value may cause team members to wave off any compliment you provide. They are not as effective an employee as they could be.

A person’s value of self is connected to self-belief and role awareness. Self-belief focuses on how much a person considers self before agreeing to do something. This doesn’t mean that the person is self-centered or selfish. In fact, that’s what our society teaches us is “wrong” with us, if we try to consider our own needs before shooting up our hand and agreeing to volunteer or take on extra duties. This can be part of a reason that people struggle with self-belief. When ignoring self, we can often agree to something, then wish we hadn’t. When this happens, we may put forth minimal effort….because, after all, we didn’t want to do it anyway.
