Title: INNOVATION IN A CHANGING WORLD – Part 1

To be stagnant is to be dead. If that’s not a quote by someone, it should be. In today’s environment, we need to be constantly trying to get better. Devise a better process; build a better mousetrap; gain the upper hand; shape a more productive team. This can be overwhelming, as our heads spin while trying to absorb material from the 24/7 news cycle, Facebook, The Wall Street Journal, books on tape, conversation in our favorite coffee shop, etc. It doesn’t matter if you lead in a non-profit, a for-profit, an educational agency, a governmental agency, or a religious entity. You are always looking for ways to “get better.”

Innovation is a way to get you there. Innovation means changing something that is established by introducing new methods or ideas. Right away we’ve got some language here that could cause “terror” in the hearts of some of your team. “Change” can be a frightening word to some people. “New” can be mis-construed as unstable. And don’t forget that we are moving away from something that is established, so we won’t be doing things the way we’ve always done them!!!

Yet, leaders MUST create a culture of innovation if their company is to remain relevant. Leaders MUST empower their employees to seek ways to innovate and to have the courage to take calculated risks.
