Title: COLLUSION AND A CHANGE OF HEART – Part 1

By Jennifer Erickson

Collusion is such an awful sounding word. Collusion, conspiracy, complicity. The words make it clear that a person is knowingly involved in something unhealthy, bad, tear-down-the-team kind of behavior. And yet, collusion occurs all the time with our teams and in our companies.

Leaders get involved in this when a team member complains about how another member is treating them. Or, when they observe an employee acting one way in front of team member X and another way in front of team member B…while talking about X.

Some leaders will try to stave off the collusion by talking to one member about changing his/her behavior. This rarely works, because the other person involved still behaves in the collusive manner. It’s important to remember that collusive behavior is circular and mutually reciprocal. Each person relates to the other from mistrust and alienation.

To stop collusive behavior, a leader must deal with it head on and recognize the reciprocity of it.
