Title: MOVING FORWARD – Part 4

As leaders, we are sometimes asked to help others move forward. This could be because we are admired for having achieved something great. It could be because we symbolize the result of hard work, dusting off knees when being knocked down, and starting all over again. It could be because we are liked and make people laugh. Whatever the vocalized reason, the foundational motive is usually trust. We are trusted.

As a leader, this is a great position in which to be. As a trusted leader, we can say things that open doors quickly and challenge people to look around a different corner, because people feel safe with us. Part of the risk cycle to forming a trusting relationship is to allow yourself to be vulnerable. Trust is not built just by helping people feel safe with you. It is also built by allowing yourself to be vulnerable, and permitting others to see this. It’s like the see-saw of trust; there has to be an equal balance.

If you are approached by someone looking to make a change, to move forward, recognize this as a great honor. Treat their questions and self-doubts with respect. Help them build confidence in themselves with gentle, guiding observations. As their desire and behavior to share increases, celebrate with them the road they are choosing to take with courage. This brings you back to the beginning, at a place of vulnerability. But, you are at a different mile marker. As T.S. Elliott said, “we shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started, and know the place for the first time.”
