Title: INTEGRITY – Part 2

Most acts of integrity are private victories. You do something, because it’s the right thing to do….not because you are going to get credit for it. You do something not out of fear (people will get mad at me) or a sense of duty (I have to), but because it’s the right thing to do. You learn from your behaviors and the consequences.

We do have to give up short-term payoffs. And, in our “gotta have it now society”, this can be hard to do. To live from integrity is to know you are in it for the long ride. And, what a ride it’s going to be!!

When we choose to behave in a manner that’s not “right”, we actually betray ourselves. So, not only could we be hurting someone else, but we are hurting ourselves. We feel victimized. We blame others and justify our actions. We may get a short-term gain, but we pay a long-term price.

It really isn’t hard to spot a person who acts from self-appreciation, rather than integrity. Teams get weakened. Goals aren’t achieved. Companies and clients suffer.

It’s also not hard to spot a person who acts from integrity. S/he knows what is valued and consciously makes choices to avoid short-term gains at the expense of long-term relationships. S/he takes responsibility for choices and the resulting consequences. Teams get strengthened, because they always know where they stand and the goals to be achieved. Nothing is hidden. Companies and clients thrive.

What do you value? Do you make your decisions around this? How do you lead? With others in mind? By knowing there is something greater in the long run? To demonstrate integrity is to be strong and filled with self-confidence. To live without integrity is the opposite. What do you want in your leaders? What do you expect from yourself, as a leader?
