Title: TEAM DECISION MAKING – Part 1

By Jennifer Erickson

In Iowa, we have had a team filled February and March in 2016! There was the State high school wrestling tournament. The boys and girls high school basketball teams have their State tournaments. And, for the first time, Des Moines hosted one of the first rounds of the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament. Teams are everywhere!

The high school teams are expected to perform. The college teams are expected to perform. There is no “whoops, my bad” when it comes to team sports and tournaments in February and March. In order for teams to perform well, they need to be able to make decisions well. This means functioning as a cohesive unit. It means giving up the individual accolades and striving for the teams’ goals. Even when there is an individual star, or a particular event that emphasizes the individual, the team is still integral to success.

There really is no difference when talking about sports teams or office/business teams. All strive toward a common goal. All have had disappointments. All have parameters in which they must work. All have wished for different members, but needed to work with those participants that they have. All try to build on members’ strengths and minimize the blindspots.

The way these teams go about making decisions, which lead them to their goals, are what set them apart. Team decision making is crucial to team success.
