Title: BUILDING TRUST – Part 1

Trust is a term that is often tossed around. It seems we take it for granted. We may assume that others trust us because of our title, corner office, the amount of money we make, the car we drive, because we are Bob’s sister, or because we chair the PTA. Trust is earned, and it takes a long time. We may work hard to establish trust with others. But, it can be destroyed in a few minutes.

Trust is confidence in relationships with one another. Trust goes both ways. You trust others. It is the degree to which you believe a person will meet your expectations, will hold your confidence, and will support you. Others trust you. What kind of a trusting environment are you creating? Do people trust you and want to be around you?

All trust starts with you. Yes, yes, I know. How can you trust Sally, when she behaves the way she does? But, I’ll go back to the statement at the beginning: all trust starts with you. “You” are the only person you can control. “You” are the only person’s behavior you can change. This is known as self-trust.

Self-trust forms on three attributes: integrity, competence, and compassion. If you have integrity, you act from a well-defined set of guiding principles. You keep commitments. You can be counted on. If you show competence, you produce results on a consistent basis. People know you have the skills to do a certain task. If you demonstrate compassion, you seek win/win outcomes. You try hard to understand the point of view of others.
