As leaders, we have many goals. We want to ensure we meet our “numbers”. We want to ensure we put out a great product. We want to meet our mission. We want to make certain that people continue to use our company and its products.

All of these goals are met through our people. Without them, our company would cease to exist. As leaders, we want to develop our people. We know it’s important to do this for a few reasons. We want to keep workers happy and engaged; it helps reduce turnover. We want to fill open positions from within the company. This helps retain workers and is a good marketing statement to entice people to join our company. We want skilled people in our company; so we offer lots of development opportunities.

But, how much do we know about how people think and learn? We may send an email to someone, offering this training for them. Or, we may write performance goals with skills to develop. We may stand before them in a meeting, talking and talking…..yet feel that the message isn’t getting across.

As a leader, if you want to leverage your most valuable asset (your people) you need to know how they think and learn. This information is based on psychological research and verified through experience.

Communicating with people effectively requires that you understand how they think, filter information, and learn. You can’t just hand them information. You must present the information in a way that matches how they think and learn.
